20 Dec 07 - Soirée de l'étage & l'anniversaire de Lucil

As the holidays approach, none of the exchange students were in the mood to study anymore. Sinhui decided that it was about time that we throw a small fête (party) for our neighbours. The two main reasons for the party: she will be leaving soon and it will probably be hard to find free time in January and also to celebrate the birthday of Lucil.

Inspired by the success stories of Eugene's sushis with his neighbours, we decided to give it a try without the master's help. On top of that, I also cooked an Indonesian specialty "sambal oelek" which consists of deep fried eggs mixed in hot spicy sambal, garlic, onions and shrimps.

the modest dinner

The preparation for sushis started as early as 4:30 pm. Kevin and I started first by boiling the short-grain rice. I forgot to measure accurately the amount of rice with the amount of water and as a result the rice was a little soft and sticky. This is the hard part about preparing sushis: the precision of the quantity of ingredients actually does make a huge difference. But the hardest part is when we have to roll the "maki". The first roll has to be really compact. I didn't manage to do that and the makis turned out to be a disaster. Haha.

The party started at about 7:30 pm. It was not a big party but it was satisfying to know that our neighbours appreciated our efforts. It is always quite a sight to watch the non-Asians try wasabi. Some of them survived, but some like Lucil and Isham almost died of it. Haha. Zouhour and Adam liked my sambal oelek and it was nice to hear their compliments. =D

As Lucil's birthday falls on Xmas day, we decided to have any early celebration before all of us leave for holidays. Evidently she was very touched when Sinhui brought in the birthday cake with a "makeshift candle" (it was actually an aromatherapy candle). She was clearly holding back her tears as she wiped her eyes a few times. Well, tears of happiness are most welcomed. =D Of course, in Singapore traditional way of birthday celebration, we always have a sabo session. Too bad she was a girl (I miss doing daopok) so I came up with the idea of her doing catwalk. The reason was simple: Lucil is a very camera-shy girl!!

Birthday Girl

So she had to do a défilé down the corridor and back. Her first attempt was unsuccessful as she showed black face. The unsatisfied audience demanded for an "encore" so she had to do twice more before we let her go. In the end, due to popular demand, everyone had to do a catwalk, including myself!! To save myself some self-esteem and grace, I shall not post most of the videos here except for mine. =D
